LUTZELBOURG : the real site


A little bit of history:

The valley of the ZORN will be retained in the project of construction of the line from PARIS to STRASBOURG in the years 1840, to allow the railroad to cross the natural barrier of the Vosges between the plain of Alsace and the Lorraine plate. Indeed, it is by the law of July 7, 1833, that the government asked for a study on the East line which will lead after many sudden starts to the law of 11 June 1842 deciding the construction of the line, parallel to the construction of the channel of the Marne to the Rhine established in 1826 and which also borrows the valley of Zorn. All work was completed between 1842 and 1845, and the layout of the railroad follows very close that of the channel. This contributed besides to a very original crossing of two means of transports, since with dimensions Paris, the line and the channel enter coast to coast the same underground, whereas at their exit, the line crossed the channel by below with in the heart of the mountain!

The opening of six tunnels was necessary to cross the Vosges, of which longest is that of Arzviller with 2690 meters. The inauguration of the Sarrebourg-Strasbourg section took place on May 28, 1851, the whole line on July 17, 1851 by Prince Louis Napoleon. The traffic experienced a constant development, especially with the opening of the section Réding-Metz (line 3) in 1877, which channeled the traffic of the North-eastern artery towards Alsace and Switzerland. The passenger traffic was consequent as of the opening of the line, since serving 9 communes in a radius of 5 km, of which the significant garrison town of Phalsbourg. The goods traffic was significant with forwardings of the freestones coming from the surrounding careers and wood especially bound for the mines. This traffic considering its rise still increased with the opening of the line with metric gauge track in 1881.

The section of Réding in Strasbourg was electrified in 1956, the whole of the Paris-Strasbourg line on July 9, 1962. (25Kv) This modernization allowed the replacement of 358 steam engines necessary to the exploitation of the line by 143 electric machines.

The railroad metric gauge track:

Affectionately called Eselbahn by the inhabitants of the area, this path knew an animated history. The first section of the Lutzelbourg-Drulingen line was carried out under the terms of the ordinance of July 22, 1881 by the Company of the Trams of Ribauvillé then under control of the SLM of Winterthur in Switzerland! ' Pfalzburger Strassenbahn Gesellschaft' (= Company of the Trams of Phalsbourg) had been born. Conceived initially for the service road of the careers of Vilsberg, the line is prolonged until Phalsbourg which suffers from the railway absence of service road and makes it possible to associate the passenger traffic towards Lutzelbourg and line 1 and freight towards the channel of the Marne to Rhine.

May 11, 1891, the unit is yielded at the German State via the Impériale direction of the Railroads of Alsace-Lorraine. Eselbahn is found under the control of the network of Elsass-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine) which prolongs in 1903, the layout until Drulingen, finding the normal track coming from Diemeringen on the axis Strasbourg-Sarreguemines. Layout in slope of 35 0/00 between Lutzelbourg and Phalsbourg - the line must leave the valley of Zorn to rise on the Lorraine plate, the speed of the train fell so much so that one could easily leave the train walks from there to gather flowers and to go up on board without same forcing the step! The competition of the road traffic brought closing to the passenger traffic on October 3, 1948, then goods on September 1, 1953. The disassembling of the line is completed in 1956.

The line knew three types of engines - three machines 020T of the SLM, T20 No 3002 to 3004 of 1883, withdrawn between 1910 and 1913, - a 030T of the EMBG.G. - the future SACM, T31 No 4 of 1891, withdrawn in 1925, - thirteen 040T Hagans built according to the articulated system of the same manufacturer, T37 No 111 to 123 of 1903/1913, of which a part was affected with the deposit of Colmar, disappeared in 1953. The rolling-stock consisted of cars travellers with bogies and and coaches with three axles.

 

The composition of the trains

As evoked in another part of this presentation, this section of line gathers two significant axes: line 1 - Paris-Strasbourg (with prolongation towards Germany, Austria) line 3 - Calais-Basle. (Axis Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy) This explains the multitude of rolling stocks of different companies. Valid composition as from June 1956,
